Archos 7 Home Tablet review: Archos 7 Home Tablet

It can also be used when selling the phone or tablet to wipe all the personal data and system settings. The two pillar features of the Archos 7 Home Tablet are Web browsing and e-mail, both of which are provided though Android. Like most features of the tablet, these apps only work in landscape view, which is sometimes inconvenient, but mostly forgivable in light of the large screen.

Video playback is also one of the surest ways to kill battery life, which Archos generously rates at 42 hours of music playback or 7 hours of video. Those best-case ratings were achieved with the tablet's screen set on low backlight and may not account for Wi-Fi activity. With Wi-Fi active and the backlight set midway, our unofficial tests found roughly 3 to 4 hours of constant general use--browsing the Web, checking e-mail, playing video--on a full charge.

Usability and performance

Archos is best known for its Android tablets, so it isn't surprising that the brand wanted to incorporate one into its smart home vision. The problem is that most home monitoring takes place on-the-go, so a tablet that can't be used as a true tablet doesn't have much use as an automation tool. That makes this system's design feel fundamentally flawed -- and overpriced when you consider that the core component doesn't really add value.

For example, Volume up + Power, Volume down + Power, Volume up + Volume down + Power, etc. The build-in stand hump makes this tablet much more of a stationary home-automation hub than an easily-transportable mobile device. That means it has the functionality of a tablet without any of the ease-of-use. And even if it didn't have that awkward stand, the other accessories pair to it via Bluetooth. In other words, if you move the tablet out of range or power it down, the related accessories won't work at all.

Design and features

Spotting this supposedly mysterious figure has become just as much a part of the Home Alone viewing experience as shouting 'Kevin! This year, once again, viewers have taken to social media to share their puzzling theories. Despite the theatrical speech, a silent, bearded extra in the queue behind Kate completely steals the scene, a man who bears an uncanny resemblance to Elvis Presley. Android Reset

In addition, the app's label-less push notifications and clumsy block layout feel hastily thrown together. Once all of your accessories are paired and installed, you can start creating what Archos calls "programs." Programs are custom rules that are structured like IFTTT recipes. I created various programs using the cameras, motion sensors, and weather sensors and they consistently worked as expected. Then, I was able to access the already-downloaded Archos Smart Home app and start pairing the accessories. The app lets you create a mirror of your accessory setup so you can monitor your house in a more systematic way.

Software

The Archos 7's onscreen keyboard is a different kind of disappointment. Sure, its sluggish touch-screen response is a drawback, as is the lack of multitouch support and predictive text, but it's the keyboard's tiny spacebar that really has us singing the blues. The tablet's design is small enough that you naturally want to grab it with both hands and type on it with your thumbs, like a giant smartphone. Unfortunately, its narrow onscreen spacebar, logically located in the middle of the keyboard, is just out of thumb's reach, requiring you to cradle the tablet in one hand and type with the other.

The tablet has a low-resolution 7-inch display and runs Jelly Bean (Android 4.2.2). Like other standard Android tablets, you can use it to access the internet, email, music, the Google Play App Store and so on. It also has a webcam, a light sensor, a microphone, a speaker, a temperature sensor, a microSD card slot, a Micro-USB port, a headphone jack, a reset button, and, confusingly, a built-in stand.

Video

Out of the box, the tablet comes with 8GB of internal memory, some of which is used by the operating system. It has even more environmental sensors than this Archos kit, as well as a camera with live-monitoring capabilities, a siren, a motion detector, and a built-in Z-Wave hub. More than that, neither Viper Home nor Piper had superfluous hardware.

That solidifies this "tablet" as a relatively permanent fixture on your coffee table or other centrally-located spot. It can play back video files with resolutions as high as 720p and at 30 frames per second, although playback can get a little jerky with large files.
